Rwanda to Have Its First Ever Integrated Steel Plant
Yesterday, Permanent Secretary, Antoine KAJANGWE, alongside H.E. Mridu Pawan Das, the High Commissioner of India to Rwanda, Mr. Himanshu Tiwari, and other dignitaries, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony of A1 Iron and Steel Rwanda Ltd., an iron and steel industry under construction in Musanze.
This integrated facility will produce a variety of products, including, but not limited to, iron bars, hollow sections, wire rod coils, channels, flat bars, weld mesh, binding wire, nails, and welding rods, all made from local iron ore for use in construction and industrial works.
The Mayor of Musanze District, Mr. Claudien Nsengimana, applauded the establishment of the steel plant, noting that it will contribute to the development of the community by providing jobs, purchasing materials, and offering other direct and indirect benefits.
According to Mr. Himanshu Tiwari, Managing Director, this industry, which is expected to begin production in May 2025 with a capacity of 0.25 million tons per annum, will provide direct employment to 1,000 people and reduce the import of steel.
H.E. Mridu Pawan Das, the High Commissioner of India to Rwanda, emphasized the strong bilateral relations and expressed confidence that more Indian investors will continue to come to Rwanda due to its conducive investment climate.
PS Kajangwe asserted that industries like this one contribute to the development targets outlined in the National Strategy for Transformation (NST2), such as increasing the industrial contribution to GDP, boosting investment and exports, and creating decent, productive jobs.
The Musanze Industrial Park now hosts two operational industries, with two more currently under construction.
