Handcrafts
Handcrafts sector has been considered as the one of the most poverty reduction strategies in Rwanda. The community is gaining confidence and hope for the future life. To day around 6000 Rwandan women are involved in basketry and they are able to pay for their necessities e.g. Food, fees for their children, mutual health ( mutuelle de santé), clothes and etc.
A fundamental prerequisite for poverty reduction is economic growth that considerably outpaces population growth. The MINICOM is seriously in need of promoting handcrafts sector with aim of creating employment to the Rwandan local population which will eventually generate wealth and economic expansion necessary to reduce incidence of poverty
Rwanda like other African countries has got a big number of women which constitute the majority of poor especially in rural areas. The Ministry of Commerce, Industry, Investment promotion, Tourism and Cooperatives has got a policy to organize them in cooperatives and train them in income generating activities like weaving, tailoring, food processing and transformation , Knitting, Embroidery, etc.
We need to build a strong partnership with other countries through our embassies which will help us to get markets for our hand made products.
